A Tea Lover’s Guide to Visiting Guwahati

If you love tea, Guwahati is a pilgrimage. This city sits at the gateway to Assam — the world’s largest contiguous tea-growing region — and offers a unique opportunity to experience tea culture at its source. No other Indian city gives you this level of access to fresh, garden-direct tea.

This guide is written by the Namhah team, who have lived and breathed tea in Guwahati for years. Whether you are visiting for a day or a week, here is how to make the most of it as a tea lover.

What Makes Guwahati Special for Tea

Guwahati is not a tea-growing area itself — the gardens are in Upper Assam (Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tinsukia) and South Assam (Cachar, Hailakandi). But Guwahati is the commercial hub where all that tea comes together. The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre processes the largest volume of CTC tea in the world. Tea companies, tasters, brokers, and brands are headquartered here. And for visitors, the city offers the widest selection of premium Assam teas in one place.

Must-Do Tea Experiences in Guwahati

1. Visit Namhah Tea Store (GS Road)

Our store on GS Road, Christian Basti, is designed for tea exploration. Browse over 50 varieties, taste any tea before buying, and get expert guidance from our team. We carry teas that are difficult to find anywhere else — single-estate Halmari CTC, rare Assam white tea from Jorhat, Arunachal Pradesh origin teas from Donyi Polo estate, and creative blends like our Rose Oolong and Butterfly Blue Pea Tea.

For visitors, our Best Selling Taster Kit (₹399) is a perfect way to sample the range. Our gift boxes also make excellent souvenirs.

Address: GS Road, Christian Basti, Guwahati 781005 Hours: Mon-Sat, 10 AM to 6 PM

2. Understand the Tea Auction Process

The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) near Dispur is fascinating if you are interested in the business side of tea. While retail visitors cannot participate, understanding that millions of kilograms of Assam tea are auctioned here every week puts the scale of the industry in perspective. Some tour operators can arrange visits.

3. Try Chai at a Traditional Stall

No visit to Guwahati is complete without drinking chai at a roadside stall. The style here is different from the rest of India — Assamese chai is typically stronger, less sweet, and brewed with local CTC that is bolder than what you get elsewhere. Look for stalls near Fancy Bazaar, Pan Bazaar, and Uzan Bazaar for the most authentic experience.

4. Explore Nearby Tea Gardens

If you have an extra day, drive to one of the tea gardens near Guwahati:

  • Sonapur Tea Estate — About 45 minutes from Guwahati. One of the closest tea gardens to the city. The Bhaduri family has been running it since the 1920s.
  • Amchong Tea Estate — About 30 minutes from Guwahati. Offers guided tea garden tours, tea tasting sessions, ATV rides, and nature walks. A full tea tourism experience.

For the legendary estates like Halmari, you would need to travel to Dibrugarh (about 5 to 6 hours by road or a short flight).

What to Buy and Bring Home

For daily chai lovers: Halmari CTC 1KG (₹700) or Rosekandy CTC 1KG (₹455) — these will transform your morning routine.

For health-conscious friends: Organic CTC (₹180), Organic Green Tea (₹200), or Immunity Tea (₹430).

For the adventurous: Butterfly Blue Pea Tea (₹449), Wine Tea (₹500), or Rose Oolong (₹440).

For gifting: Namhah Gift Boxes (₹800 to ₹1,999) in signature tin boxes — beautifully packaged and ready to give.

Best Time to Visit

February to April (first flush season): The freshest teas of the year are being produced. This is when you will find first flush CTC and orthodox teas at their peak.

May to June (second flush season): This is when Assam produces its boldest, most characterful teas. Second flush is the classic “Assam” flavour.

October to December (post-monsoon): Pleasant weather in Guwahati, good time to visit. Most tea varieties from the year are available.

Avoid: July to September can be very rainy. Tea gardens are productive but travel can be difficult.
