White tea is the rarest and most delicate variety produced in Assam, and Silver Needles represents the pinnacle of the craft. Made exclusively from the unopened buds of the Camellia sinensis plant, our Assam White Tea is sourced from select tea gardens in Jorhat — the historic heartland of Assam tea.
Unlike black or green tea, white tea undergoes minimal processing. The buds are simply withered under natural sunlight and dried gently with warm air. There is no rolling, no oxidation, and no mechanical intervention. This preserves the highest concentration of catechins, polyphenols, and natural antioxidants found in the fresh leaf — making white tea one of the healthiest beverages available.
The “Silver Needles” name comes from the fine, silvery-white hairs that cover each bud. These tiny hairs (called trichomes) are a natural feature of the youngest tea buds and are a sign of careful, selective plucking — only the very youngest, most tender buds qualify for Silver Needles grade.
Why is Assam white tea rare? Silver Needles can only be produced during a narrow harvest window when the buds are at precisely the right stage of growth. The yield per acre is a fraction of what CTC or orthodox production achieves. And the processing demands patience and skill — too much heat and the delicate flavours are destroyed, too little and the tea will not store well.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale, luminous golden liquor. Almost transparent with a subtle shimmer.
Aroma: Subtle and clean. Notes of dried flowers, fresh hay, and a whisper of honey.
Flavour: Ethereally light with a silky-smooth mouthfeel. Delicate sweetness with notes of honeydew melon, white flowers, and toasted cereal. There is absolutely no bitterness or astringency — just pure, serene flavour.
Body: Light and silky. The mouthfeel is remarkably smooth — almost like drinking liquid silk.
Finish: Quiet and lingering. A faint, natural sweetness stays on the palate long after the last sip.
Brewing Guide
Important: White tea requires cooler water than black or green tea.
- Tea: 2 teaspoons (about 3 grams) per cup
- Water: 200ml at 75–80°C (NOT boiling — let the water cool for 3–4 minutes after boiling)
- Steep Time: 4–5 minutes (white tea is forgiving — even 7 minutes will not make it bitter)
- Infusions: Can be re-steeped 2–3 times. Each infusion reveals slightly different nuances.
- Serve: Plain. Do not add milk, sugar, or lemon — they would overwhelm the delicate flavour.
Pro Tip: White tea is a meditative tea. Brew it when you have time to sit quietly and pay attention. The subtlety is the point — this is not a tea you gulp while checking your phone. Pour it into a white or glass cup to appreciate the pale golden colour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Assam white tea the same as Chinese white tea? A: Both are made from the Camellia sinensis plant with minimal processing, but Assam white tea has a slightly bolder, maltier undertone compared to lighter Chinese Fujian white teas. Assam white tea is rarer globally and increasingly sought after by tea connoisseurs.
Q: Does white tea really have health benefits? A: White tea has the highest concentration of catechins and polyphenols among all tea types because of its minimal processing. Research associates these antioxidants with supporting skin health, cardiovascular wellness, healthy metabolism, and immune function. However, tea should complement a balanced lifestyle, not replace medical advice.
Q: Why is white tea more expensive than green or black tea? A: Silver Needles uses only the youngest buds, available in very limited quantities during a narrow harvest window. The yield per acre is a fraction of CTC or orthodox production. The delicate processing also demands more time and skill than machine-based methods.
Q: Can I add milk to white tea? A: We strongly recommend drinking white tea plain. The entire appeal of white tea is its delicate, nuanced flavour — milk would completely mask it. If you prefer milk tea, our Assam CTC range is a much better choice.
Q: How many cups can I make from 50g? A: Approximately 25–30 cups. White tea buds are very lightweight, so 50g goes further than you might expect. Each serving also supports 2–3 re-steepings, effectively doubling the cup count.
